Village route to shut for Severn Trent works

An entrance road to a village near Stafford is set to be closed for three weeks while essential works take place at a nearby water treatment plant.

Motorists have also been warned that a four-way traffic light system and temporary 30mph speed limit will be in place at the junction of the A51 and New Road, near Hixon, while the Church Lane closure is in place from 7 May.

Work began to improve the Hixon sewage treatment works in October and the £7.6m upgrade is due to be completed by mid-December.

Kay Gill, community communications officer at water provider Severn Trent, said the project was part of a £100m annual spend on its sewage network to reduce sewer flooding and pollutions.

The work included relocating water that had been through the treatment process from Moreton Brook to the River Trent, she said.

“While final effluent is water that has gone through our treatment process, it may still contain some trace chemicals, so by moving the outfall to a larger watercourse – like the River Trent – we can minimise any potential impact," Ms Gill stated.

"This creates a better, more vibrant wildlife habitat in the brook and means that there is less likely to be flooding during heavy rain.”
