VIDEO: Thief attempting to evade police

(KRON) –  A three-agency retail theft operation has resulted in 88 arrests and more than $23,000 worth of merchandise recovered. The Daly City Police Department, the San Bruno Police Department, and the San Mateo Police Department collaborated to combat organized retail theft.

The operation began on October 1, 2023 to April 26, 2024. The operation resulted in:

  • 82 crimes

  • 719 recovered items

  • $23,521 worth of merchandise recovered

  • 88 arrests

  • 2 weapons seized

  • 2 combative suspects

Video released by San Mateo PD shows a suspected thief attempting to evade officers. This arrest was a part of the retail theft operation.

The participating officers wore both plain clothes and uniform attire in this operation. The task force developed a greater understanding of shopping center operations, map layouts and standard operating procedures.

Chief Ryan Johansen of the San Bruno Police Department said, “The smart, focused enforcement coupled with enhanced technologies from the ORT Grant is yielding remarkable results. I extend my gratitude to the BSCC, San Mateo County DA’s Office, and the Daly City and San Mateo Police Departments for their collaboration.”

According to the San Mateo Police Department, the task force is collaborating with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. A deputy district attorney has been assigned to the task force to facilitate prosecutions.
