KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A little boy remains at a hospital fighting for his life Thursday after being shot Wednesday night near Central High School. In the last eight days, he’s the third innocent child shot in Kansas City.

An 11-year-old and 5-year-old both died from their wounds in separate shootings.

In video you will only see on FOX4, it begins by showing kids playing on a sunny evening. The neighborhood hoop is up, bicycles are out and the warm weather is doing what it has a tendency to do: Bring people and communities together.

Moments into the video, there’s a barrage of bullets where all you hear for 15 seconds is gunfire.

The end result of that gun battle was a 6-year-old was getting knocked off his bike by a bullet – now in a local hospital fighting for his life according to his family.

“It’s horrible. When I just found out he was 6 years old and all those people that was outside – left a little kid outside, that’s bad. It makes me want to get away, but I got kids and stuff, too, and just to know that it was a kid out here,” neighbor Roniesha Ford said.

KCPD says its officers were already in the area when the shots started, which prompted them to respond. When they got there the 6-year-old was lying on the sidewalk. KCPD says this remains an ongoing investigation.

Kansas City leaders share ways to reduce violence against children

“They know they kids got guns; they know they kids is carrying guns. If you now your kids is out here doing stuff to people, y’all need to stop y’all kids before it be y’all kids,” Ford said.

This leaves this community, and this city, asking what will it take for our children, our youth to be able to live and not have to dodge bullets.

“It’s sad because a little boy just got killed, then the little girl just got shot sleeping in her bed… like why is it so many kids?” Ford asked.

KCPD says investigators can’t solve these crimes without your help so. You can reach out to KCPD directly, or you can remain anonymous, by calling the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
