Massive fire at Oakland lumber warehouse under investigation

(KRON) — A large fire broke out at a two-story commercial building Sunday evening in Oakland, the Oakland Fire Department (OFD) said on X. The fire broke out at the Economy Lumber Company building on 750 High Street, which is right off Interstate 880.

As of Monday morning, the cause of the fire was under investigation, according to the Oakland Fire Department. Crews remained on the scene overnight working with the property owner and heavy equipment operator to pull the building apart to get to hot spots.

Firefighters are expected to remain on-scene most of the day Monday, according to OFD.

The blaze warranted a large response as multiple fire engines responded to the scene. Approximately 80 firefighters were called to the scene. A total of roughly 100 people across multiple agencies responded to the fire.

OFD advised residents in the area to close their doors and windows to prevent smoke exposure, the department said. Rail traffic was stopped in both directions temporarily, but was reopened by 11 p.m., fire officials said.
