Victim and suspect in Spring Valley shooting identified

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities have released the identities of the victim and suspect involved in Tuesday morning’s deadly shooting in Spring Valley.

Shortly after 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, deputies with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of someone trying to break into a residence in the 800 block of La Presa Avenue.

When deputies arrived, they said no one answered the front door and made their way around to the backyard. They saw someone lying on the couch unresponsive, according to law enforcement.

Deputies eventually forced their way into the home where they found a woman with head trauma. Despite life-saving efforts by deputies and paramedics, the victim died at the scene.

A release from the sheriff’s department Wednesday identified the victim as 35-year-old Ashley Bird and the preliminary cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities later found the suspect, 39-year-old Christopher Bird, dead in his vehicle at Calafia Beach Park in San Clemente. The manner and cause of his death will be determined by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

The sheriff’s department said it is not searching for anyone else involved in this case and there is no apparent danger to the community. The department’s homicide unit is still investigating the motivation and circumstances of the crime.
