Victim of crash involving motorcycle, State Police vehicle was an Ocean County man

SOUTHAMPTON - A motorcyclist who died in a collision here with a New Jersey State Police vehicle was an Ocean County man, authorities say.

Frank Lando Jr., 65, of Toms River was fatally injured in an April 9 accident on Route 70 near Burrs Mill Road, according to a statement from the Attorney General's Office.

State Police Trooper Anthony Fernandes was on patrol in a marked vehicle when the collision occurred around 11:35 a.m., the statement said.

Lando died at an area hospital around 12:45 p.m.

The trooper did not have significant injuries.

Lando was a 1981 graduate of Rutgers University, where he earned a degree in software engineering, an obituary said.

He was a retiree after working at UPS as a senior system programmer analyst, it added.

The obituary described Lando as a deeply religious man and "a sublimely talented musician who had been playing as the lead and rhythm guitarist in the band Voice of Doom, and as bassist in the cover bands, Sound Matters and Dune Lane."

A state law requires an investigation into any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacit.

The Attorney General's Office has declined to provide additional details, citing the investigation.
