Vicky McClure's new thriller series confirms release date with first look photos

Paramount+ have announced a release date for all-new thriller series Insomnia, starring Vicky McClure.

The Line of Duty and Trigger Point actor heads up the six-part series playing Emma Averill, a woman who starts to fear for her sanity after her seemingly dream life and rewarding, hard-earned career starts to become a nightmare.

The streaming service confirmed Insomnia will drop in the UK next month, on Thursday, May 23, with Paramount+ additionally teasing the new drama with several first-look photos from the production.

McClure is seen in some pale blue pyjamas and looking distressed in several new photos.

"A couple of weeks before her fortieth birthday, Emma stops sleeping – just as her mother had done right before she suffered a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her own fortieth birthday," reads the show synopsis.

"Emma's mother always told her she'd go the same way, that she had the same 'bad blood' and now Emma's terrified it's true.

"As events worsen, Emma's world starts to unravel and she realises that only by investigating the truth of her painful past, can she find the answers to her present and prevent tragedy from striking a second time."

Downton Abbey's Tom Cullen stars as Emma's husband Robert, with fellow Line of Duty star Leanne Best playing her estranged sister Phoebe.

Corinna Malowe portrays Emma's mother, with Smylie Bradwell and India Fowler appearing as Emma and Tom's children Will and Chloe.

Additional cast members include Inside Man's Lyndsey Marshal, Dominic Tighe, Jade Harrison, Robert Gilbert and Unforgotten star Michelle Bonnard.

Insomnia is directed by Börkur Sigthorsson, whose previous credits include recent Sky drama The Midwich Cuckoos and BBC detective drama Baptiste.

The screenplay has been written by Sarah Pinborough who adapted her novel of the same name for screen. She additionally serves as Executive Producer.

Insomnia will premiere on May 23, streaming on Paramount+ in the UK.
