Vehicles collide after driver falls asleep at the wheel: police

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — One person was sent to the hospital with “no feeling below the waist” after a two-vehicle crash in San Ysidro, authorities said.

According to the San Diego Police Department, a 22-year-old man was traveling northbound in the 1800 block of Howard Avenue around 3:50 a.m. when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

Police said the driver collided with a Toyota 4Runner driven by a 49-year-old man. During the crash, the Toyota’s seats collapsed backward and a passenger was impacted. That person stated that they had no feeling below the waist.

The passenger was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a fractured thoracic vertebrae. No further information on their condition was provided by authorities.

The Traffic Division responded and is handling the investigation. DUI was not a factor, police said. Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
