VBPD:1 dead after shooting on Level Green Blvd.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach police are investigating a deadly shooting.

Friday just before 11 p.m. officers responded to a shots fired call on the 1300 block of Level Green Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found a shooting victim that paramedics later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Kalani Bailey-Cortez.

Police have not released any suspect information.

Neighbor Robert Palmer said he heard about four gunshots go off that night.

“It was pretty scary,” Palmer said. “And I was pretty overwhelmed with what was going on. When I came home, too, there was another accident on Indian River Road, so we thought it was part of that, but then we heard the gunshots.”

Another neighbor, Nicole Schimmel said Cortez crashed his car into a light pole in front of a daycare.

She went on to tell 10 On Your Side it looked like a bullet went through the passenger side window and hit him while he was driving.

“There was a white car that was smashed right into it, so they pulled up there and then about 15 to 20 more cop cars come plus ambulance, and a fire truck and they’re all swarming out,” she said.

Schimmel said there are many parts of the crime that make her uneasy.

“What makes it more nerve wracking is, say I got out of work five minutes sooner, that could’ve been me,” Schimmel said.

We are working to gather more details about the incident.
