Utility scam reported in Winfield

WINFIELD, Kan. (KSNW) — The Winfield Police Department says someone appears to be posing as the city utility.

The City of Winfield reports to police that their utility department has received calls from residents reporting an automated system contacted them in reference to their utility bill. Winfield Police say the utility department will never contact you over the phone and demand payment.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, imposter scams like this are the 2nd most common type of fraud. They offer these tips on how to spot utility scams and avoid them.
