Internet restored following outage caused by utility pole fire across Tampa Bay cities

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Spectrum customers across the Tampa Bay area had trouble accessing their internet services Saturday after a utility pole fire.

Spectrum spokesperson Lorelie Johnson told 8 On Your Side that an electrical fire damaged a utility pole that carried the fiber cables that connected Spectrum customers in the Pinellas Park area.

As of a 4:17 p.m. update, Johnson said they have a full restoration.

DownDetector reported about 791 outages at around 2 p.m. Two of the most reported locations were said to be Tampa and St. Petersburg, with Tampa reporting 320 outages.

Customers in Apollo Beach and Sarasota also said they had issues in emails sent to 8 On Your Side.

The outage lasted several hours due to Spectrum technicians being delayed by safety concerns, according to Johnson.

“Our teams had to wait until the utility company did their work and deemed the area safe for our technicians to gain access and fix damaged equipment,” she said. “They’ve gained access and are working now to resolve. Spectrum customers should see services come back online over the next couple of hours.”
