Utilities board approves lagoon dredging

Apr. 17—The Board of the Water, Light and Sinking Fund Commission, which oversees Dalton Utilities, unanimously voted Tuesday to approve a $1.867 million contract with GFL Environmental Services for a lagoon dredging project at the Riverwater Treatment Plant.

The contract calls for GFL Environmental Services to de-water and dispose of a projected 3,500 tons of sediment from the lagoon. Dalton Utilities CEO John Thomas said sediment builds up during the use of the lagoon and has to be dredged periodically. If it isn't, he said, it reduces the capacity of the lagoon.

The contract came in under the estimated $2 million cost. GFL Environmental Services will provide the labor for the project, including permitting. Dalton Utilities will provide any materials that might be needed.

The project has a timeline of 200 days.

GFL Environmental Services is headquartered in Toronto, Canada, and has offices across North America.
