Utah construction is taking a long weekend for Memorial Day travel

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah construction season will be taking a long weekend for Memorial Day to help alleviate any frustrations with what is expected to be heavier-than-usual traffic.

According to AAA, more than 43.8 million Americans are projected to travel on Memorial Day weekend this year, up four percent from last year’s numbers.

“We’re expecting Memorial Day weekend numbers like we haven’t seen in almost 20 years,” said AAA Utah Senior Vice President of Membership and Travel Marketing Brian Ng. “It’s not just a return to pre-pandemic levels, but also foreshadows the robust travel season ahead.”

The Utah Department of Transportation said drivers can expect up to 25-minute delays on southbound I-15 in Salt Lake County on Friday, May 24. Other areas on the Wasatch Front such as I-15 in Davis and Weber County and eastbound US-6 could have an additional 10 minutes of delays.

On Memorial Day itself, UDOT said drivers should expect up to 20 minutes of additional delays on westbound US-6 and a 10-minute delay on northbound I-15 near Nephi.

To help alleviate travel frustrations, UDOT said it would be suspending construction and opening all lanes of traffic, however, certain lane restrictions can’t be avoided.

Here are some areas where drivers can still expect some closures:

  • I-15 near 5600 South and Riverdale Road in Weber County: I-15 will continue to be down to three lanes where crews are working to reconstruct the I-15 interchange and widen 5600 South to 3500 West.

  • SR-12 near Henrieville: Expect short detours for bridge replacements near Henrieville.

  • SR-132 from Nephi: SR-132 will remain open with alternating one-way traffic signals.

The day after Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 28, construction will begin on SR-24 between I-70 and Hanksville. UDOT warned drivers taking that route to or from Lake Powell can expect slower speed limits and flagging delays of up to 15 minutes.
