Utah has 4 of the top 5 snowiest ski resorts in U.S. this season: Report

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah has had another fantastic winter, resulting in the Beehive State holding four of the top five positions on the list of snowiest ski resorts in the U.S. this season.

Here are the top five snowiest ski resorts in the U.S. currently, according to OpenSnow:

  1. Alyeska (Alaska) — 657″

  2. Alta (Utah) — 575″

  3. Brighton (Utah) — 522″

  4. Snowbird (Utah) — 519″

  5. Solitude (Utah) — 502″

Utah’s snowpack sits at 18.7″ as of April 1, which is over four inches above the average of 14.2″ for this time of year — about 131% above normal. While it’s been a great year, this time last year we had a whopping 28.4″ Snow Water Equivalent — 200% above normal.

Forecast says Great Salt Lake could rise 1.2 feet this spring — but a lot of factors could impact it

But the snow is still coming. Since Friday, March 29, we’ve received 40″ at Brighton, 35″ at Snowbasin, 32″ at Solitude, 29″ at Alta, 26″ at Park City, and 22″ at Brian Head. This equates to nearly 3 ft. at Snowbasin and over 3 ft. at the top of the Cottonwoods.

And after back-to-back years of solid snowpack, scientists believe that the Great Salt Lake’s water levels could rise around 1.2 feet this spring. Between April and July, the Great Salt Lake could see 870,000 acre-feet of water feed into the lake, according to a March monthly report from the Utah Snow Survey.

As we begin the new month, we have lingering moisture from our weekend storm system, as the storm slowly works its way south through the Beehive State Monday, providing additional rain and snow showers.

Additionally, another potent spring storm system looks to be heading our way on Friday. Early forecasts show a robust drop in temperatures with highs 10-20 degrees below average by the weekend.
