USPS marks Mailbox Improvement Week

May 20—Residents are asked to take time this week to inspect and repair their mailboxes as the U.S. Postal Service marks Mailbox Improvement Week.

The annual observance, which runs May 19-25, serves as a reminder for homeowners to make sure their mailbox is in good condition to allow mail carriers to safely deliver the mail.

Left in the elements, mailboxes are not immune from wear and tear, and some typical maintenance activities homeowners may need to do include replacing loose hinges on the door, repainting a mailbox, remounting a mailbox post or replacing faded or worn house numbers, according to a news release from the USPS announcing the event.

Residents planning to replace their mailbox must make sure the new receptacle meets postal service standards as mail will not be delivered to unapproved containers. Custom boxes can be used but must be approved by the local postmaster.
