Top Twitter Trend of the Week: Polar Vortex
Some places in the US and Canada were colder than the Antarctic this week, as a Polar Vortex spun its way down the East Coast of North America. This icy blast sent temperatures into the negatives and broke cold records across the board: New York City plummeted to –15 C, beating a record of –14 C set in 1896 and further south, Atlanta even saw -14C. Not only were people a little colder than usual, but airlines cancelled more than 2,000 flights in the U.S. – stranding travellers for days. There have also been over 21 deaths caused from the extreme cold; collapsing after shovelling and not having appropriate shelter were the main causes.
Social media saw a different side of this Arctic cold through images and videos. Ice and snow were the main subjects, where we learned that if it’s cold enough, boiling water that is thrown outside turns into snow once it makes contact with the air… and blowing bubbles is nearly impossible (haven’t you heard of ice bubbles?). We have also seen photos of Niagara Falls, the Hudson River and the entire city of Chicago completely covered in ice and snow. Now that temperatures are beginning to go back up, millions of people are starting to feel some relief. The West Coast is just looking forward to not hearing anymore complaining.

Top Sports: NFL Playoffs
This past weekend was the first of the NFL playoffs, and Twitter users sure had a lot to talk about. We saw the Chargers take out the Bengals, Eagles fall to the Saints, the 49ers take the Packers and the Colts beat the Chiefs by only 1 point. While fans of all teams were voicing their opinions, we also saw news being shared of injuries, strategies and of course… predictions. Who is going to make it to the big game and who is going to take the trophy home? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Top Politics: Chris Christie
Chris Christie was in the news again this week after a scandal exposed that the lanes of the George Washington Bridge were closed to get revenge on a local mayor. The political drama came to an end after Christie held a nearly two-hour press conference, apologizing and explaining how these acts went on without his knowledge. He has since fired one of his top aides and cut ties with a political adviser, both of whom apparently went behind Christie’s back to close down lanes (causing days of backed up traffic) on the bridge in order to punish the (Democratic) mayor of Fort Lee, NJ because he didn’t advocate the re-election of the Governor.

Top Entertainment: Coachella 2014
Music lovers across the country were all over Twitter after the lineup for Coachella 2014 was announced last week. Happening over two weeks in April, the festival held in Indio, California will be seeing the likes of a re-united Outkast, Lana Del Rey, Arcade Fire and Muse (as well as a multitude other awesome musical acts).
