URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Park District has announced a new date for its annual Martin Luther King Day Peace March.

The march was originally scheduled for King’s birthday — January 15 — but extreme winter weather led to it being postponed. Now, the march will take place on April 4, the anniversary of the civil rights leader’s assassination.

People wanting to take part can gather at King Park (915 West Wascher Drive) at 5:30 p.m. Remarks and peace messages will be made by Mayor Diane Marlin, Police Chief Larry Boone, and Urbana Park District administrators, along with the unveiling of a new work of art made by artist Lisa Kesler.

The group will then march or ride to the Douglass Center in Champaign, followed by more remarks and peace messages. The Douglass Center will also be the home of a Pace Focus from the Urbana Free Library and an exhibit on Martin Luther King Jr.

The event will conclude at 7 p.m. with busses available to travel back to King Park, if needed.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
