Updated: Fire damages downtown Frederick apartment building

A fire at a downtown Frederick apartment building on Friday caused at least $400,000 in damage, a fire official said.

The fire happened at South Street School Apartments at the corner of West South and Ice streets.

Sarah Campbell, a spokeswoman for the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services, wrote in a text message that the fire was ruled accidental, as a result of unattended cooking. She provided the damage estimate.

One apartment where the fire happened had direct fire damage, while the other seven had smoke and water damage, according to Campbell.

Frederick County Fire Chief Tom Coe said everyone got out of the building safely. No injuries were reported.

A property management company was relocating residents of the building, Campbell wrote.

The fire was in the third floor and the attic.

Most of the fire was under control within 30 minutes, although there were some additional small fires, Coe said at the scene.

About 60 firefighters responded to the initial call. A fire task force was called in to provide additional help.

The first crew arrived at the scene at about 2:39 p.m.
