Unsolved TN: Night out in Nashville in 1983 turns into mysterious disappearance

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The night of April 23, 1983, was no different from any other night in Nashville as a group of friends were going out to grab a couple of drinks.

Little did they know, that would be the last time any of them saw 34-year-old Linda Carol Taylor. According to Metro Nashville police, she and her friends had met a group of guys that night and gone to a place called The Jungle on 4th Avenue South.

As the night stretched on, the group reportedly wound up at an apartment at 2120 Belmont Boulevard, near the Belmont University campus. Taylor’s friends told investigators it was apartment “C.”

Taylor stayed at the apartment with one of the guys while her friends went back out to continue drinking. They came back a couple of hours later to pick her up, but by then, Taylor was gone.

According to investigators, the man told Taylor’s friends she had left the apartment on her own before they got there and refused to let them inside.

She never showed up for work the next morning and hasn’t been seen nor heard from since. Police believe foul play is likely in the case, but it’s still unclear exactly what happened to Taylor.

UNSOLVED TENNESSEE: Find more of the state’s cold cases, missing persons, and other mysteries

In an interview with News 2 in 2022, Metro Nashville Cold Case Detective Matthew Filter explained that the limited technology available at the time has made this case difficult to solve. It remains one of the oldest unsolved missing persons cases in the city.

“That fact that back in the 1980s you didn’t have the surveillance that you’ve got now where everybody’s movements — at least when they’re out in public — are pretty much being tracked, it definitely makes it a lot more difficult to find out where people go or what may have happened to a person,” Filter told News 2.

Taylor had brown hair, blue eyes and a yellow eagle tattoo on her upper left shoulder. According to police, she lived several miles away from where she was last seen, at an apartment in the 100 block of Brinkhaven Avenue.

If still alive today, Taylor would be 75 years old. Even after more than four decades, police are continuing to try to solve her disappearance. The FBI also put out a flyer seeking information on her disappearance in 2018.

Anyone that knew Taylor or who has any information is asked to contact the MNPD at 615-862-8600. Tipsters can also call Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME (615-742-7463). Callers can remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
