Unknown perpetrators throw stones at German far-right official's home
Unidentified perpetrators have thrown stones and an incendiary device at the residence of a far-right city councillor in the eastern German city of Halle, police said on Monday morning, in yet another attack targeting a politician in the country.
Perpetrators threw stones at the detached house's windows overnight and damaged several of them, it said.
They also threw an incendiary device at the front door, but it went out on its own. A doormat was damaged.
Neither witnesses nor the police were able to identify any suspicious people in the neighbourhood afterwards, according to the statement.
According to the police, a member of the AfD parliamentary group on Halle's city council lives in the house in the Halle-Kröllwitz district. State security, which is responsible for politically motivated offences, is investigating the case, it said.
Politicians in Germany have been increasingly targeted in attacks in recent weeks as tensions run high in the lead-up to the European elections in June.
On May 3, Matthias Ecke, the top candidate in the elections for the Social Democrats in the state of Saxony, was beaten so badly while hanging campaign posters in the eastern city of Dresden that he had to be hospitalized and undergo surgery.
