University YMCA taking input for time capsule project

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The University YMCA at the University of Illinois is creating a time capsule to be opened during its 200th anniversary in 50 years’ time — and they are looking for suggestions.

The project comes on the heels of the University YMCA’s 150th anniversary, which was celebrated last year. A time capsule from 1907 was discovered in February 2023 during the demolition of Illini Hall, which was originally built by the YMCA and housed the program for 10 years. The capsule was finally opened that September in honor of the YMCA’s sesquicentennial.

Now, University YMCA officials want to continue the preservation of its history with another time capsule. This time, it will be opened in 2073 for its two-century celebration.

Currently, officials are brainstorming what materials to place inside the capsule. They want the community to share their ideas of items and sentiments to include in the capsule that will impact the people who will open the capsule up 50 years from now.
