United flight leaving Sacramento diverted to SFO due to possible mechanical issue

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A United Airlines flight was diverted to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Sunday morning due to a “possible mechanical issue,” a United spokesperson confirmed to KRON4. United Flight 2285 was scheduled for an 8:45 a.m. departure from Sacramento for a Denver arrival.

The flight, which had 164 passengers, landed safely at SFO, United said. Another aircraft was arranged to take the passengers to Denver. That flight landed in Denver at 2:56 p.m. Mountain Time, which was listed 2 hours and 47 minutes late, according to FlightAware.

The airplane was a 737-800 aircraft with six crew members, United said. An emergency was not declared as the spokesperson did not mention any specific issues with the aircraft for United Flight 2285.

This marks the second United flight involving SFO to be diverted in the last month. On March 29, a United flight from Frankfurt, Germany bound for SFO returned to the European country after a toilet reportedly overflowed into the cabin.

In March, United was involved in a series of similar incidents in which SFO-involved United flights and/or Boeing planes were diverted.

On March 7, a Boeing 777 that was taking off from SFO lost a tire during takeoff. A United flight on March 15 departed from SFO and lost a panel, which was found after landing in Oregon. A Boeing 777-200 with 243 passengers and 14 crew onboard on March 18 was forced to return to the gate at SFO due to an engine start issue.
