Several thousand people will want to be conditionally released from serving their sentences to perform contract military service during martial law, MP David Arakhamia, said on May 8, according to news agency Interfax-Ukraine.

"The total resource is about 15,000-20,000," said the head of the Servant of the People party.

"We don't know how many of them will sign a contract, it's subject to the agreement of both parties," Arakhamia said.

“We expect it to be at least several thousand people.”

Conscription of prisoners

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed bill No. 11079-1 on May 8, which allows certain categories of prisoners to be conscripted into the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Those convicted of grievous premeditated murder, rape, sexual violence, and crimes against national security will not be conscripted.
