UIPD issue all-clear on suspicious package found outside a university building

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois Police investigated a suspicious package outside of a campus building Wednesday evening.

Around 5:43 p.m., University police were notified by an employee at the university that there was an unusual package by the entryway of Mumford Hall, 1301 W. Gregory Drive. A K-9 was dispatched to investigate the package and indicated that the box had a hazardous substance inside.

UIPD evacuated the building and sent out an Illini-Alert notification to all students, faculty and staff.

Upon further analysis of the package, including an X-ray of the box, the East Central Illinois Bomb Squad determined there wasn’t an explosive in the package. Police issued an “all-clear” Illini-Alert.

University police say the box did contain materials that the dog could have seen as potentially hazardous, but there was nothing dangerous or illicit.

Police thanked the employee for being attentive and notifying authorities to a potentially dangerous situation. They encourage community members to report suspicious activity to the police department.

“And if it turns out to be nothing to worry about, that’s a good thing,” said UIPD Chief Matt Ballinger. “We prefer that to the alternative of something bad happening because no one said anything.”
