U of I Jewish community gathers at Alma Mater for ‘show of pride and unity’

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Members of the University of Illinois’ Jewish population are gathering at Alma Mater for what they called a “a show of pride and unity.”

Jewish leaders announced the gathering on Monday in response to a pro-Palestine encampment that’s been set up for several days, something the leaders referred to as “open antisemitism.”

Alma Mater is about a quarter of a mile away from the encampment at Foellinger Auditorium, but neither gathering is visible from the other.

Reporters on the scene observed several individuals making speeches to a growing crowd of people. They also overheard that people plan to leave Alma Mater by 4 p.m.
