Two western Wiregrass newspapers close

GENEVA COUNTY, Ala (WDHN) — Two Wiregrass newspapers, including the last in Geneva County, have ceased publication.

Geneva County Police Chief Pepper Mock confirmed to WDHN that the Geneva County Reaper published its last issue on Wednesday, March 13.

The Geneva County Reaper branded themselves “Geneva County’s Oldest and Largest Newspaper since 1899.”

On March 15, the Opp Chamber of Commerce revealed that The Opp News, a weekly publication based in Opp, Alabama, also closed down at the same time as the Geneva County Reaper. Both publications were owned by Pujol Publishing and Printing.

“Their dedication to keeping our community informed will be greatly missed,” said an Opp Chamber of Commerce spokesperson.

However, sources have said a deal may be in the works for another company to purchase and publish the weekly newspapers. WDHN has contacted the editor of the Geneva County Reaper to find out more.

The website and social media pages for the Geneva County Reaper and Opp News have been disabled.
