Athens-Clarke police conducted two vehicle checkpoints on Tuesday that resulted in numerous citations and warnings, police announced Thursday.

The daytime checks were set up at the intersections of Mitchell Bridge Road and River Ridge Drive from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and at Danielsville Road and Smokey Road from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

During the checks, police also distributed pamphlets on pedestrian laws.

Officers were the busiest on Mitchell Bridge Road, where 1,136 vehicles were checked, where at least 10 citations were issued along with eight warnings for violations such as window tints, expired licenses, and registration violations.

On Danielsville Road, there were 662 vehicles checked for many of the same violations including distracted driving and seatbelt violations. Two arrests were made here due to people driving while their licenses were suspended, according to the report.

Unlike the New Year’s Eve checkpoint just months ago, there were no DUI cases made. Police spokesman Geoff Gilland said that was due likely to fact the checks were held during the daylight hours and not on a holiday or weekend.

The checkpoints were supervised by Sgt. Vincent Schill.
