Two tornadoes confirmed in Johnson County overnight, causing damage to Mill Valley HS

SHAWNEE, Kan. — The National Weather Service has confirmed at least two tornadoes hit Johnson County, Kansas as severe storms moved across the Kansas City area overnight.

The NWS says an EF-1 tornado occurred just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday south of Mill Valley High School and tracked north across the campus, continuing northeast toward Johnson Drive. The tornado ended around 10:36 p.m.

A second EF-1 tornado was confirmed at 10:39 p.m. in the northeastern part of the county. The NWS said much of the path was EF-0 damage, with a pocked of EF-1 damage and max winds around 90 miles per hour.

The NWS said the second tornado began near the western edge of Prairie Village, near 79th and Lamar Avenue and continued northeast through Prairie Village toward Fairway and ended around 10:50 p.m. on the western edge of Mission Hills.

More information and a detailed damage path will be released within the coming days, according to the NWS.
