Two escape serious injury in airplane crash at Big Bear Airport

A pilot and passenger managed to walk away with only minor injuries after a small airplane crashed at Big Bear Airport on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The incident took place about 1:30 p.m. at the northwest corner of the airport at 501 Valley Blvd., according to the Big Bear Fire Department.

Arriving firefighters encountered a single-engine Cessna that had crashed upon takeoff, fire officials said in a written statement.

"Two occupants on board had self-evacuated with minor injuries," the statement said. "There were no hazards to report during this incident."

Damage to the aircraft was described as moderate.

The plane came to a rest in a dirt field, photos of the scene showed. Its nose and propeller were bent down at a 45-degree angle and the tip of a wing was sheared off.

It was listed in Federal Aviation Administration records as a Cessna model 195B, manufactured in 1955 and registered to an owner in Newport Beach. Its flight status was valid.

The airport was briefly shut down to air traffic during the initial response, according to initial radio broadcasts from the scene.
