Two crew members injured after train derails in Unity Village near Lee’s Summit

Two railroad personnel were injured after a train derailed early Sunday in Unity Village.

Fire crews responded around 12:45 a.m. to the derailment between Rhinehart and Northwest Colbern roads, according to Jim Eden, a spokesman for the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

Firefighters found around 12 to 20 rail cars of the 144-car train on their side in a heavily wooded area near Little Cedar Creek.

Crews said there were no fires or potentially hazardous materials released from the derailment.

Two train crew members were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, Eden said.

Unity Village city officials and Union Pacific Railroad crews began cleanup of the area.

Carl Chinnery Natural Trail is closed, but all other Unity Village facilities remain open.
