Two in contentious fight for Somerset selectmen's seat: What to know in 60 seconds
Somerset voters will have just two choices to make when they cast ballots in the annual Town Election on April 8.
Out of 10 races on the ballot for positions in town government, two are contested: selectmen and sewer commissioner.
Here’s what you need to know in 60 seconds:
Who is running for Somerset Board of Selectmen?
Selectman Allen Smith is up for re-election, challenged by former selectman Holly McNamara. The seat is a three-year term.
McNamara was first elected to the town Board of Selectmen in 2016. She served until 2021. Two days after a contentious race saw Smith elected to the board over then-incumbent Dave Berube, McNamara announced on Facebook that she was “resigning effective immediately”; she formalized the resignation in a selectmen’s meeting a day later. She had a year left in her term.
At the time, McNamara blamed what she termed bullying and harassment from members of the group Save Our Bay Brayton Point, with which Smith was affiliated.
The redevelopment of Brayton Point has been controversial in town. The town currently has taken the owners, Brayton Point LLC, to court to collect what it alleges are $3.5 million in fines.

Town clerk: Caitlin Hadala
Assessor: Marc Dionne
School Committee: Victor Machado
Regional School Committee: Kimberly Ferreira
Library trustee: Elizabeth Ponte
Planning Board: Timothy Turner
Playground and Recreation Commissioner: Joshua Darlington
Housing Authority: Robert Taylor
When is Somerset's town election being held, and where can I vote?
It’s set for April 8, and polls are open from noon to 8 p.m. Residents can cast ballots at Somerset Berkley Regional High School.
