MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff’s officials Thursday identified two bodies recovered Wednesday, after a stolen car careened into the St. Lucie River, as young men from Lake Worth.

The bodies recovered from the river Wednesday near Southwest Kanner Highway and Southeast Cove Road were identified as Jerry Choisy, 19, and Geovany Alexis, 18, according to Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Christine Christofek.

The bodies were recovered after the body of Marcus Griffin, 17, of Lake Worth, was retrieved from the Mazda stolen out of Boynton Beach that crashed into the river early Tuesday morning.

A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old, both of Boynton Beach, were taken into custody after the crash. One wore a ski mask, Sheriff William Snyder has said.

Snyder said the case began at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday when his agency learned of a stolen vehicle on High Meadows Avenue in Palm City. He said supervisors notified road deputies to not turn on their emergency lights. He said they knew a helicopter was available, and they have a different pursuing methodology.

The helicopter, he said, picked up the fast-moving sedan at 12:42 a.m. on State Road 714, which becomes Indian Street. The vehicle wound up heading west on Southeast Cove Road and barreling across Southwest Kanner Highway and into the St. Lucie River. It is thought to have run over tire deflation devices before crossing Southwest Kanner Highway.

Snyder has said the vehicle traveled 11 miles in 6 minutes.

Snyder said Wednesday the 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were released as prosecutors work with detectives to determine possible charges.
