Two awarded FWSSR Calf Scramble Scholarships

Mar. 29—Two local FFA students were recently awarded $4,000 scholarships by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo's Calf Scramble Scholarship Committee.

Alex Rubalcaba of Joshua FFA, son of Rheana Whelchel, and Preston Maxwell of Godley FFA, son of Janet and Jody Maxwell, were both awarded scholarships after participating in the 2023 Fort Worth Stock Show Calf Scramble program. Sixty-eight Texas 4-H and FFA members shared in $440,000 in Calf Scramble scholarship dollars.

Their scholarships were the result of the hard work and dedication necessary for participants to complete the rigorous Calf Scramble program. The moment they caught a calf during a 2023 Stock Show rodeo performance their Calf Scramble journey began. These youth used Stock Show funds toward the purchase of a calf that they cared for in 2023.

Rubalcaba's Beefmaster heifer project was sponsored by TexOp Construction, LP of Roanoke, and Maxwell's Charolais heifer project was sponsored by Jason and Sydney Morgan of Benbrook. Caring for their heifer, submitting monthly reports, exhibiting at the 2024 Fort Worth Livestock Show and submitting a final essay were required for scholarship consideration.

Sponsors for Rubalcaba's scholarship include Aeristo — C.A. Schmidt, Ltd.; Cooper Oil & Gas, LLC; Richard Dyess; Fast-Trak Construction Inc.; Outback Cattle & Horse Company; Roto-Rooter of Tarrant and Parker County; Paul and Krista Schulman; and Vic and Carla Thompson Memorial Scholarship Trust.

Sponsors for Maxwell's scholarship include: Matt and Kathryn Carter; Duane Morris LLP; Collin Haggerty; Hahnfeld Hoffer Stanford; Meta Alice Keith Bratten Foundation; Professional Packaging; Wild Ride Rodeo Team — Louis Baldwin; and Tommy Winters.

The 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is Jan. 17 through Feb. 8. Rodeo tickets will be available beginning Sept. 9. For information, visit fwssr.com or call 817-877-2400.
