Tuolumne County Sheriff addresses exposed internal investigations

(FOX40.COM) — The Tuolumne County Sheriff issued a statement on Friday afternoon following the publication of an article by the Union Democrat covering six deputies involved in internal affairs investigations.

According to the Union Democrat article, six deputies between 2018 and 2022 are alleged to be involved in a series of crimes that resulted in terminations, resignations and suspensions.

“As your Sheriff, I will not make excuses or deflect responsibility; I take ownership that the facts outlined in our internal affairs investigations did take place,” Sheriff David Vasquez wrote in a news release on Friday. “I can also attest that when these allegations of misconduct were reported to the Professional Standards Division, they were addressed without delay…”

In his statement, Vasquez explained why these internal investigations were shared with the public when previously they were prohibited from public release.

“Senate Bill 1421 amended the California Public Records Act Request to include certain sustained findings of peace officer misconduct,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez wrote that he will be holding a series of town halls across the county to address questions from the public.

“In closing, I want to thank you for your continued trust and confidence, and I want to thank my staff that continues our noble cause of serving you with professionalism and pride,” Vasquez said.
