Tulare man wanted in 2023 homicide extradited from Chattanooga, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A suspect wanted in a July 2023 homicide in Tulare is in that police department’s custody, according to the Tulare Police Department.

Police say on July 13, 2023, John White III was killed in front of his home on the 300 block of North West Street in the City of Tulare.

Investigators identified 22-year-old James Mitchell from Tulare as the suspect. Officers say he fled to the Bay Area and then to Tennessee.

On January 4th, 2024 Mitchell was arrested in the Chattanooga area by the U.S. Marshall’s Office. Police say Mitchell refused extradition and a governor’s warrant had to be sought to get him back to California.

On April 4, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said they extradited Mitchell to Tulare County, where he is in custody on homicide charges.
