Trump Tower fire: Man dies after blaze breaks out on 50th floor of New York skyscraper

A man has died after a fire broke out on the 50th floor of Trump Tower in New York.

Todd Brassner, 67, died in hospital after the apartment was engulfed by the blaze.

The New York Fire Department said it responded to a blaze on the upper floors of the skyscraper, which is home to Donald and Melania Trump's apartment.

The US president was in Washington at the time and tweeted that the fire was now out.

Social media video showed fire and smoke rising from the structure in central Manhattan.

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) said on Twitter it was a four-alarm blaze.

A photo posted by the FDNY showed flames and smoke bellowing from windows of the 58-storey building.

The NYPD told the public to expect increased traffic and closures in nearby streets due to emergency vehicles.

President Trump tweeted to say the fire had been extinguished and was "very confined" thanks to the design of the building.

"Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!"

His son, Eric, said the fire was in a residential apartment and thanked the FDNY and NYPD for their response.
