Large fire at recycling center in Franklin County under investigation

UPDATE: 4/26 FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Franklin County Department of Public Safety released new details regarding a large fire that ignited at a recycling center on April 25.

The department says around 9:30 a.m., crews were called to a fire at the OmniSource metal recycling plant on Commerce Road.

We’re told debris from the back of a truck caught fire sending thick smoke over the area. Smoke could be seen from 220.

Fire officials say every fire company in Franklin County was called to the scene, including units from Henry and Pittsylvania County.

For almost eight hours, crews battled the large blaze and a crane was used to disperse the debris pile.

Officials confirmed no one was hurt during the incident.

The Franklin County Fire Marshal is working to learn what caused the fire.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — More than 10 fire departments are currently on the scene and working to extinguish a fire at a recycling center in Franklin County.

Franklin County officials tell WFXR that the call came in around 9:30 a.m. for a fire on Commerce Road.

We’re told the blaze has been contained to the back of the truck and has not spread to any buildings, at this time.

Franklin County says there are no hydrants in the area and crews are using tucks to bring water to the scene. As a result, a high volume of companies are on the scene.

Currently, heavy smoke can be seen on 220.
