Troup Co. Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer arrested on drug and contraband charges

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. (WRBL) — A detention officer with the sheriff’s office was arrested and charged with contraband-related charges on Tuesday, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO).

Investigators with TCSO had previously learned contraband was being taken into the Sheriff’s Office Work Release Annex Facility by a detention officer. According to the office, Tyler Carson was being paid by inmates to bring contraband inside while working his shift.

Narcotics investigators say they later caught Carson smoking Methamphetamine inside his work vehicle at the parking lot of the annex.

Carson was arrested and his vehicle was searched. He was booked into Troup County Jail and charged with the following:

  • Possession of methamphetamine

  • Crossing the guard line with drugs

  • Items prohibited by an inmate

Sheriff James Woodruff says the security and integrity of the jail and annex is one of his highest priorities.

“Prior to anyone working for this agency, they undergo a detailed pre-employment background check and once they are employed, the consequences of such criminal activity are made clear to them,” said Woodruff. “I want to thank my staff for quickly investigating this matter and arresting Carson.”
