Trisha Calvarese, Democratic pick for special election, talks immigration

DENVER (KDVR) — The candidates in the special election for former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s seat have been announced. Now, the public is learning more about the nominees and how they plan to help Coloradans should they fill the role.

Former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez was chosen as the Republican nominee, despite not running in the primary on June 25. “Colorado Point of View” plans to talk with him in the coming weeks.

Democrats selected first-time candidate Trisha Calvarese earlier this week. She prides herself on being from Highlands Ranch, part of the district she now hopes to represent. A major topic of conversation there, and across Douglas County, is migrants.

Earlier this week, county commissioners passed an emergency measure banning buses carrying migrants from making unscheduled stops in unincorporated areas, including Highlands Ranch.

Calvarese weighed in on the issue this week on “Colorado Point of View,” saying Congress needs to focus on the root causes of immigration.

“I want to look at, across the board, how do we create pathways to citizenship for folks who are here? I just provided end-of-life care to both of my parents, and I want to point out there were migrants who were part of that care team. Migrants are in our fields. They’re working for our farmers. They are a critical part of our economy,” Calvarese said.

She went on to bash Republicans, like U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who refused to pass a bill that aimed to bolster security at the southern border.

“Building a wall or a fence, right? You’re almost going to be creating avenues where more people can come in. I don’t think that that’s the answer,” Calvarese said.
