Tribune holds forum on print changes, eEdition and a new digital bonus. Watch the video

The Tribune hosted a subscriber forum on Tuesday at the San Luis Obispo Library to explain the transition to two printed newspapers a week, introduce the benefits of our digital products and answer questions from readers.

On April 15, we will shift to our new print schedule, publishing print papers on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The change has been a long time coming as the number of print subscribers has fallen steadily in the last two decades.

These newspapers will be substantially larger than our current versions, with more room for local news and all of the week’s puzzle pages split between the two days.

For fans of the crossword and our other games, that means you’ll have all the same pages you do now, and you can save them to fill out throughout the week.

A highlight of the forum was a run-through of all of The Tribune’s extensive digital offerings, including the website, eEdition and mobile app.

If you love print and haven’t explored the eEdition, it’s filled with a wealth of information across a variety of topics including national and world news, opinion, features, sports, additional color comics and even more games and puzzles.

It’s not unusual, in fact, to have as many as 20 extra sports pages, including things like box scores and schedules that we no longer have room for in print.

The eEdition posts by 6 a.m. each morning and includes more current news than the print edition, like sports results from the night before.

The eEdition is made up of three components:

  • the replica edition of the day’s print newspaper

  • the dynamic edition, which includes pages in front of the replica edition to pick up stories published after our print deadline

  • the Extra Extra edition, which features many more pages on the topics noted above.

You can get to it by clicking on the “Today’s eEdition” link at the top left of our home page or through the icon at the bottom of the page on our mobile app, which is available as a free download at your phone’s app store.

The Tribune hosted a forum at the San Luis Obispo Library on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, about why print is reducing to two days a week and how to use the Tribune eEdition. Editor Joe Tarica introduced the Tribune staff and held a question-and-answer session for more than 60 attendees.

We also announced another exciting new digital bonus for subscribers: universal access across all of McClatchy’s 30 news sites.

That means your Tribune subscription allows you to read everything from our sister papers like the Sacramento Bee, the Fresno Bee and beyond, including the Miami Herald, the Kansas City Star, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and more. To see a full list, visit mcclatchy.com/our-impact/markets.

If you haven’t activated your digital access, now is a great time to do that at sanluisobispo.com/activate.

At Tuesday’s forum, we also introduced several members of The Tribune’s news staff and discussed some new story approaches, including our Reality Check feature.

To wrap up, we took reader questions — and there were a lot! If you’re wondering about something, have a question about your bill or any other inquiry, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at jtarica@thetribunenews.com or 805-781-7911 and we’ll get you the answers you need.

As always, I want to thank all of you who support local journalism by subscribing to The Tribune, by being champions of an informed citizenry and by standing up for a key pillar of American democracy.

I understand the disruption this causes for longtime subscribers of the print paper, and we are doing everything we can to help you navigate through this change.

We also want you to know that these changes are just the latest in a history that dates back to 1869 and will continue long into the future. They reflect an organization that adapts as needed to preserve the mission we have dedicated our careers to: telling the stories of San Luis Obispo County.

Rest assured, the format may change, but that work will continue.

Finally, know this as well: It is no exaggeration to say we would not be here doing this important work without you.
