Trash collection worker dies after getting hit on the job by garbage truck, TPD says

A garbage truck worker was hit and killed after the very truck he was riding on hit him, according to a Tallahassee Police Department social media post.

The truck was stopped collecting trash in the area of Carp Lane and Sail Court around 11:15 a.m., according to the post.

"One person, an adult male, was collecting trash on the back of a garbage truck," TPD said. "Preliminary findings indicate the man was struck by the truck as it pulled forward."

The man was transported to the hospital where he later died due to his injuries.

A spokesperson for WastePro, which handles trash pickup for the county, said in a statement that it would be inappropriate to comment at this time as this is an ongoing investigation. The company noted it is "fully cooperating with local law enforcement."

"We are saddened to learn of this tragic incident," the spokesperson wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with our employees and their families."

The accident was the second fatal crash in Leon County in less than three hours Tuesday. Around 9:40 a.m., TPD posted on social media that it was working a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Capital Circle Northwest and Gearhart Road.

One driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, and the second driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Three hours later, TPD posted an update stating the seriously injured driver "died as a result of his injuries."
