Transportation department suspending lane closures

May 23—VALDOSTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending lane closures from noon Friday, May 24, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, for the Memorial Day weekend.

Crews may still be working near highways and emergency or maintenance-related lane closures are still possible, the GDOT said in a statement.

I-75, which runs through Tift, Cook and Lowndes counties, is expected to see heavy holiday congestion southbound and northbound coming out of Atlanta in Stockbridge, the statement said.

Drivers in need of help during the Memorial Day weekend can use the state-operated CHAMP service, which will help stranded motorists, change tires, maintain traffic flow and identify several maintenance issues. CHAMP can be reached by dialing 511.
