'Trainspotting 2' Delivers a First Teaser

After years of hearing Trainspotting’s original cast and crew go back and forth about the possibility of a big-screen sequel, Danny Boyle and Co. finally reconvened this past March to show us what’s become of Sick Boy, Renton, Spud, and Begbie since the drug-related craziness of the 1996 hit. Now, we have our first look at a minimalist teaser for Transpotting 2.

Don’t expect much exciting new footage in the 40-second debut promo, though we do get a quick look at the film’s lead foursome — Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle — standing side-by-side 20 years on as (unsurprisingly) a train roars past. Revved up by the familiar sound of the first film’s signature song, Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life,” the clip is more a confirmation of the movie’s existence than an actual first look, though it does serve as a handy reminder that the 45-year-old McGregor seems to be aging at a rate far slower than most mortal men.

T2: Trainspotting 2 — which, curiously, has adopted the abbreviated moniker of James Cameron’s T2: Terminator 2 — is based on Porno, author Irving Welsh’s 2002 novel that picks up years after the original saga. The film debuts in the U.K. on Jan. 27, 2017, followed by its stateside release on Feb. 3, 2017.
