Crews at Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park still plowing spring snow

DENVER (KDVR) – Although it’s warming up in the Denver metro area, it’s not summer just yet at Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you’re looking for a hike during the long weekend, you might have to try a different spot. Trail Ridge Road won’t be open for Memorial Day. Rocky Mountain National Park posted pictures of the road conditions in May.

The road to get to well-known hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park requires Trail Ridge Road, which is currently buried in snow. The park has been working to plow the road since mid-April.

“May storms with significant winds at higher elevations have hampered snow plowing operations,” said Kyle Patterson with the national park. “Plow operators this week have encountered additional snow accumulation, significant wind resulting in deep snow drifts, freezing cold temperatures and ice.”

The current vehicle closure points on the road are at Many Parks Curve on the east side and Colorado River Trailhead on the west side, according to an email from Patterson.

At this time, there’s no expected opening date. Patterson said snow and wind above the tree line are in the forecast throughout the weekend and the park will see what next week holds.

Anyone heading towards the road, like pedestrians and bicyclists, should prepare for high wind gusts, snow accumulation, deep drifted snow and ice above the tree line.
