Traffic stop leads to felony drug charges

WEST POINT – A routine traffic stop in West Point ended with a Clay County man facing drug trafficking charges.

Clay County deputy sheriffs pulled over a vehicle on Highway 45 South in West Point on May 22. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said the stopped ended with the arrest of Jirtavius Shaquille Cox, 30, of West Point, charged with aggravated trafficking of fentanyl, felony possession of marijuana and child endangerment. The narcotics investigator recovered approximately 242 grams of suspected Fentanyl tablets and a felony amount of marijuana.

Officials included the child endangerment charge because an infant was in the car in close proximately to both a firearm and the drugs. The sheriff said the child appeared to be in good condition and was later released to family.

Cox remains incarcerated at the Clay County Detention Center on a $55,000 bond.
