Yahoo Autos Toyota Confirms a Second-Generation 86 Is In the Works
Most Toyotas are a snooze to drive, but the 86 (formerly the Scion FR-S) is one of the bright spots in the Japanese automaker's lineup. It's not particularly quick, but the 86's light weight and agility help make up for its relative lack of power. Since 2013, sales have tapered off, calling the future of the 86 into question. But it sounds like Toyota's rear-wheel-drive sports car will live on.
Speaking to Autocar, Karl Schlicht, the head of Toyota Europe, confirmed that a second-generation 86 is currently in the works. "The GT86 will carry on," said Schlicht. "The car serves a big purpose. We are not getting out of that business. Sporty cars go through their phases. It's our intention to continue with that car."
As for whether or not the second-generation 86 will still use a Subaru engine, Schlicht couldn't say. But the advantages a boxer engine provides make it sound likely.
"Will it be with Subaru?" said Schlicht. "I don't know. But for the concept to carry on, with the low engine, we'd have to do that. There are a lot of reasons to continue with Subaru."
Sounds like a good plan for us. Now if only we could convince Toyota to also offer the redesigned 86 with more power. And maybe a shooting brake version. That would really be something special.
