Topeka animals rescued from hoarding situation find new homes

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Dozens of animals involved in an animal cruelty case in Topeka are now safely in new homes.

The U.S. Humane Society says 73 animals rescued in January are now with new owners after being adopted. The animals, many of them Great Dane dogs, were recovered from a home in central Topeka by the Topeka Police Department (TPD) and Humane Society after they were found living in dangerous conditions.

In total, 22 dogs, 48 cats, two rats and a guinea pig were rescued from the home, according to the Humane Society. While rescuers found some animals dead at the home, the survivors have now been relocated to new homes in the Kansas City area with local rescue partners.

The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office later charged a man, Charles C. Solomon, in connection to the animal cruelty investigation. He is still being held at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

The TPD said in a social media post on April 1 that people should always be on the lookout for similar cases. Some warning signs like persistent foul odors coming from a home or yard, lack of basic care, animals infested with fleas and/or ticks and unattended animals with signs of injury are all things people should report to police. You can make a report to the TPD by calling 785-368-9551.

“Animal welfare work is hard, emotionally and physically, and it takes a special kind of person to be able to do the work. We’d like to send a huge thanks to folks in this profession for the compassion and dedication they put into caring for animals and holding people accountable. We’re especially grateful for our amazing Animal Control Officers who recognized the severity of the situation and called for help.”
