US News names top 10 best high schools in Oklahoma, though chunk of test scores missing

Ten Oklahoma high schools were ranked among the top 25% of high schools nationwide in a 2024 report from U.S. News & World Report Rankings.

The study reviewed about 25,000 high schools across the nation based on six indicators of school quality: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rate.

The maximum, or best, college readiness index is 100.

In Oklahoma, however, scores do not include Advanced Placement test scores, because the Oklahoma State Department of Education missed a deadline to allow US News to include them in the 2024 rankings. Data on schools with students who took and earned a qualifying score on an AP test makes up 30% of a school's overall college readiness score.

While the state Board of Education unanimously approved the release of AP data in November, the letter granting permission sent to the College Board and US News was too late for the data to be included, US News said.

US News said that OSDE missed the permission granting deadline twice - for both the 2023 and 2024 rankings - but US News confirmed the department has already sent a letter permitting the data for the 2025 Best High School rankings.
