ALTOONA, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Governor Tony Evers has declared (5/23/24) as International GM1 Gangliosidosis Awareness Day. As part of the day, Evers sent a proclamation letter to Lindsay Jackelen, an Altoona woman living with GM1 Gangliosidosis Type 3, an extremely rare genetic disorder that harms nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Lindsay and her father Gary are grateful for the proclamation and hope the day can bring vital awareness to the disorder and its research for a cure, “She belongs to a GM1 Foundation, and they’re raising money hopefully to get more research done. There’s just a lack of research: We need research, we need people to be more aware. We were very happy to get that proclamation from the Governor. It just increases recognition, and that’s what we’re, and awareness is what we’re after here.”

More information on GM1 Gangliosidosis, and the research conducted by the GM1 Foundation can be found at curegm1.org.
