In our fast-paced modern society, the internet makes for a useful tool. Everything we need to know is only a click away. But we have to recognize the downfalls to that kind of power. As she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tina Fey worries about what the internet is doing to us. With seemingly everything filtered through social media, and the ability to comment and criticize with relative anonymity, we can’t deny the obvious problems.

In an interview talking to David Letterman, Tina Fey discussed the internet and its effect on our society.

She said, “But the thing I worry about [more] than actual human interaction is the internet. Because that’s just despicable: people just being able to be awful to each other without having to be in the same room.”

We totally get Tina’s fears. We’ve seen a lot of the hate and vitriol that the internet inspires this year, and it’s difficult to think that won’t affect us as a society. Tina specifically mentioned how it was used in the election.

Tina worries that because it’s anonymous, social media tends to be more hurtful.

She said, “It’s so easy for people to abuse each other and to abandon all civility.”

We totally see that. Tina also told David that people probably wouldn’t say such terrible things in the church donut line. Yeah, David was surprised that Tina had a church donut line when she was a kid, too!

We totally get Tina’s worries that the internet is hurting society. Probably the best thing we can do is to try and spread kindness.

It’s up to all of us to push for a safer and more positive online environment.
